Ferry to Norderney
Norderney is a small island located off the North Sea coast of Germany. The island is about 15 kilometers long and a maximum 2.5 kilometers wide. Population is about 6,200 people. The complete eastern part of the island has the status of a national park. Car traffic within the city is strictly regulated. Tourists who bring there own car are allowed to haul there luggage from the ferry to the hotel. Afterwards you have to park your car at special parking spaces.

Norderney - to my eyes - is a perfect place for family vacations (I went there several times during my childhood). But also for active people (sports!). The island is well known for wind surfing e.g.

In April 2009  we - my daughters and I - stayed ten days at the 'Haus am Weststrand'.

It is a church owned former group tour house. Nowadays rooms are available for individual tourists, too. It is not a place for backpackers, though (the whole island is not). The athmosphere is quite informal - we loved it. Anyway: there is plenty of other accommodation available on the island.
We spent our time walking along the beaches, doing a mini-rail tour around the island, visiting the public swimming pool and doing a boat trip to the famous seal banks. Of course drinking a 'Friesentee' is a must-do, too!
So, if you happen to travel in Northwest Germany and have a day off - get yourself on the ferry to Norderney (departure from Norddeich) and enjoy the fresh air on the island. Make a beach walk and have a tea in the city afterwards. Or rent a bike and visit the national park.

There is no need to go through this day by day. Instead of that I have divided this blog into two picture sections: landscape/nature and architecture. I hope my selectio n of pictures will help you getting an impression of the beauty of this island.

This blog also includes some pictures taken during a family trip to Norderney in may 2005.
