The ferry

Up early as we had booked a ferry crossing to Kangaroo Island. It was a long drive to Cape Jervis to catch th eferry...we had got a good deal on the ferry fares ($10 for car and three adults) as long as we used sealink accommodation.

When we arrived at the ferry port the sea looked a bit rough (it always does to me!!) so I took precautionary benadryl AND anti sickness tablets....of course I had to be accompanied by the usual 2 types on my sea crossings -the ones who have never been seasick in their lives and insist on eating a whole range of nausea-creating crap...step forward for this journey the Fatt family from Porkout -on-sea -two supersize brothers and assorted family with appetites to match. And my other companion of choice, a young lass who declared that she always gets seasick and then went on to recount several great heaves of the past.

...i mean, thanks love, I empathise but really, keep it to yourself,OK?

Anyway, thankfully, the sea wasn't too bad -I just sat firmly in my seat, eyes fixed to the horizon, and didnt move until we docked....

We drove off the ferry and travelled to American River to find our accommodation. American River is so named because some american sealers landed there and thought it was a river (it is , in fact, a narrow bay). We had booked into the Mathew Flinders Motel -described in the brochure as a 'Boutique Motel'...no, really. No , it wasnt. Boutique or motel. It was basic. And we were the only ones staying...the accommodation consisted of a kitchen/living room with two bedrooms - a single bedroom with dividing wall and a double separated only by a roller blind (!).

Weird. It did have fantastic views out over American River tho'.....we did a quick recce and found American River to be pretty small -one shop and a few hotels....

We drove off to Kingscote (main town) where we parked up near the jetty and watched the pelicans for a while, before taking a drive down along the coast. We returned to Kingscote to find somewhere to eat and made the fatal error of settling on the first hotel/pub we found -the Aurora Ozone (yes, Ozone) hotel...

I picked the beer battered whiting which was delicious but Les and Sheila went for the Chicken caesar salad -the lettuce was brown, the egg solid and the chicken overcooked so they ended up sending it back and getting a refund. How can you mess up caesar salad for gods sake!! Anyway, we found another restaurant -Bellas - nearby where the girls had delicious greek salads so the night was saved....

American River Hotels & Accommodations review
