Venus' Gate (Porta Venere)
We parked by the Porte Fonte Vecchia.   A good portion of the Roman walls and some gates are still in evidence.  The Roman blocks were neat and uniform and the top portions of the walls rebuilt in later ages were rougher and not cut as neatly.

The city's  tourism web page seems informative but it is only in Italian.   To find information isn't that hard, even for an English speaker, for instance Mappa della Citta was easy for me to find in order to get the name of the gate we parked by.

We walked along the walls to the Porta Consolare.  We were hungry and were lucky to find the Ristorante Pizzeria Il Frantoio.
Porta San Ventura - Roman gate from the Augustine age.
This is a family run restaurant in the basement of an old building.  Beautiful food - I had the Stinco (pork) di Maiale and it was one of the best dishes I have tasted on this trip or anywhere else.  It was only 10 Euros!    The boys were happy.     We were in here for a couple of hours, mostly because a big ground had arrived a little earlier than us and had a lot of orders.    While we were relaxing the boys went out to a gelato store they had spotted before we went into the restaurant.   Michael came back in to report that a storm was coming and soon after he told us we could hear the first sound of thunder.

I really wanted to explore this town but it was obvious a downpour was coming.   Instead of going back out through the gate we walked inside the south wall and came out by the Porta Venere.  The rain hit just as soon as we got into the car and we were soon on our way to Spoleto.

I regret not being able to wander through Spello.  It is smaller than Gubbio and it would have only taken 2 hours to leisurely explore the whole town.   I hope to return someday.
