canal cruise

My friends and I flew from different parts of the U.S., so we met at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam and had a full day layover there before heading to South Africa.  It was the day before summer, but it was very cold in Amsterdam.  It turned out to be colder than any day we had in South Africa where it was winter.  My bag that was checked at JFK was checked through to Cape Town even though it wasn't leaving until the next day, so I only had the cloths that were on me at the moment.  I could have had KLM retrieve my bag, but they said it could take up to 3 hours, so I didn't want to waste our sightseeing time in Amsterdam.

Pancake House (creperie)

We checked into the Hilton Schiphol Hotel, which was super convenient since we could walk to it from the airport.  After leaving our luggage in the room, we went back to Schiphol to catch a train to Centraal Station.  When we arrived it was very overcast, cold, windy and threatening rain.  The first thing we did was hop on to a covered boat for a roundtrip canal cruise.  This was a good way to see what parts of the city we wanted to explore more.  There is also a hop-on, hop-off version of the canal cruises, which probably would have been better.  After we returned to our starting point at Centraal Station, we walked down toward the museum area.  We ate lunch at a pancake house (creperie) called Pannekoeken Mosselhuis.  They had a long list of both sweet and savory crepes.

Rijkmuseum
I had a mixed mushroom, which I thought would be a medley of different kinds of mushrooms, but instead was just button mushrooms mixed with other vegetables.  It was still good though.

After we visited the Hard Rock Cafe (obligatory stop for my friend Shannon) and walked around the museum area, we caught a tram back to Centraal Station, so we could get back to our hotel before the night's World Cup game started.  Besides wanting to see the game (Brazil versus Ivory Coast), we also wanted to unwind after the overnight flight.  We ate at the hotel lounge where they were showing the game on a large screen with a projection TV.  We had a variety of Dutch cheeses and appetizers while we watched Brazil win 3 to 1.
