On our arrival back to Hanoi from Halong Bay we were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time as today Vietnam is holding a huge party in Hanoi to celebrate 1000 years of independence from China. We arrived back to our hotel quite late so we had a quick shower, got ready and then rushed out for dinner so that we could witness some of the celebrations. The city was absolutely packed with people and motorbikes so it was quite a struggle moving around but it was an absolutely amazing site to witness and to be part of. The atmosphere was absolutely buzzing, and apart from a lady trying to pickpocket Ben (luckily he noticed and pushed her away!) it was a great evening and we really felt lucky to have been able to join in on the celebrations.

In the city they had set up 2 main stages where they had performances from acrobatics on ropes which came down from the ceiling, dancing and some boxing. The celebrations finished at about 9.30 as there is a curfew in Vietnam of 11 so we headed back to the hotel for an early night.

The next day we had free time in Hanoi so we decided to explore the city and raid the shops. We didnt find anything to buy but it was a nice day and Hanoi is a great city so we were glad to have had the time to look around it. The only downside which we have found with the city is the traffic. There are so many motorbikes rushing around that every time you cross the road you literally have to take your life into your hands and step out into the mad never ending flow of traffic and just hope that they will drive around you, so far we have been lucky!!
