After a yummy breakfast in the enlarged dining hall (included with your room now), it was a bit more hiking. We headed through Cathedral Woods to Black Head, plunging back into the magnificent pine forest populated by fairy houses. Fairy houses are vignettes constructed from natural bits laying about to give the illusion that small folk live here. They are delightful to encounter in the woods, though the inventory was low today and most were in dire need of repair. We decided the outcome was due to the summer season having just begun the previous weekend.
Regardless, the fairy houses lend a unique charm and elevate your anticipation – what could be behind that next tree trunk?
Wasn’t long before we reached the cliffs of Black Head and more jaw dropping views.
The return ferry wasn’t disembarking until 3:15PM, so we parked at the gift shop by the dock and got drinks to compensate for the space we took up. There was a basket of playing cards on our table and we idled away an hour playing games and chatting with others. Bittersweet but cherished moments on the brink of leaving heaven. Farewell, Monhegan, until we meet again.
