The tower with the big iron globe on top is part of Jules Verne's office, where he wrote all his novels. I was born in the House right next to it.
The city history starts with it foundation by the romans.  In the middle age the city made a fortune with a dyeing-plant that created indigo, and sold its velvet all over Europ. Rich merchants financed at that time the construction of one of the cathedral which lasted an entire century. During WWI the city was the headquarter of the commonwealth  troups, the first tanks had been tried on the battleground of the region by Australian troops.  The English presence left a big influence in the city architecture, and in reverse a town was named Amiens in Queensland Australia. I just wonder how they pronounce the name...

The city has a big particularity: a floating garden of 1.6 square miles, where people cultivate flowers and vegetables since the Middle Ages.
The winter circus, which was built when Jules Verne was the city Major.
This garden called the Hortillonages can be visited on a traditional barck. Every Saturday there is also the market over water where farmers come on their bark to sell their production.

Jules Verne spend most of his life in Amiens where he wrote all of his roman. He was the city major for a while and you can visit his Office which has been transformed into a Museum. This museum has been restored in 2006, it now offers pedagogic and interesting visits to discover Jules Verne life. But contrary to the legend he never wrote any of his books on top of the tower...

Amiens is a small town but you can still enjoy the night life in  the restaurant, club and bar along the river. The best thing is to go from one place to another.
