The start of the hike
The day has finally arrived. We are all ready to set out on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. We are all very excited because the altitude so far hasn't impacted us too badly. We were a bit nervous about it, but at least until we start climbing on the 2nd day we should be pretty good with altitude.

The drive from Cusco to Ollantaytambo was about 2 hours, I think. From Ollantaytambo we had to be driven a bit further out of town because, I think, there was something going on with the train tracks all the way into town.

Finally, we made it to the starting point of the trail. Actually, they dropped us off and we had to walk a mile or 2 to get to the official entrance of the Inca Trail. The first day of the trail was surprising to me, mainly because I wasn't expecting running water in any bathrooms way out on the trail. But also how many times we hiked past various homes.

There was a stunning Inca site around mid-day that made our jaws drop. If we're this impressed already I can't imagine what Machu Picchu is going to be like. Our campsite for the first night appeared to be on someone's property. There were chickens, and donkeys, and maybe even a cow patrolling the area with us. After a fantastic dinner it was time to pass out for the night. Long day ahead of us tomorrow.
