So I found really cheap direct flights from Kansas City to Washington DC as long as we took the earliest flight out and latest flight back. So our flight left at 6am on Saturday and was ontime and uneventful. We landed a bit before 9:30 and hopped on the Metro into the city. We arrived at our hotel around 10:30. We stayed at the Beacon Hotel about a 20 minute walk north of the White House. We got 50% off our room and because of that it was an okay deal. The room was decent, a cheap upgrade had been done, and the staff was friendly. With our luck our room was ready so we dropped out stuff off and headed out for a walking tour of DC. Luckily today wasn't too hot, 90's and cloudy because we spent most of it outside.
We walked to the White House (didn't go inside) and then walked around the Monuments and over the bridge to Arlington. We decided to take the Hop-on, hop-off tour of Arlington because it was on a huge hill! We stopped at every stop and saw the Changing of the Guard and Kennedy's grave.
After this we decided to take the Metro to the American History Museum because it was open until 7pm. This was a great idea. All the tour groups were gone and the museum was pretty empty, we had a great time and stayed about 3-4 hours until closing. Derek wanted to eat in a brewery so I took out my handy book about DC and picked out the Capital City Brewing Company which was on the way back to our hotel. The food was pretty good but Derek didn't enjoy the beer that much. After this we walked back to the hotel and passed out as we had been up since 4am.
