The Argonaut Hotel just ahead.
I arrived at the cute-little -very- welcoming Argonaut Hotel down by Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco on a Monday afternoon, Memorial Day 2009. The hotel is all in nautical style, even the doorman is in uniform.  After checking in to the room, the front desk helped me locate the last tour bus going over the Golden Gate Bridge that afternoon. (So glad I didn't miss out on that!)  Thanks to the great location of the hotel, i just walked (well - actually I sort of ran) two blocks away.  Whoa what a thrill!.  The wind was crazy!  I was on the top deck so I could see everything.  Tied a scarf around my head tightly and with my coat on was still freezing.

(I'm from Texas, though).  The bridge is just amazing and wow I still can't believe I've actually been over it.  The tour goes to other sites and so it was a very cool tour, about an hour and a half.

For dinner I walked with my roomie a few blocks from the hotel to a restaurant on the Wharf named Aliotos Restaurant.  We had a table overlooking the Bay and on my plate was the most delish fresh halibut with crimini mushrooms, pearl onions and truffle oil over mashed potatoes. OMG sooo good!!!  Desert (but of course)?  We shared her special occasion light sweet cake and my tirimisu with rum and chocolate and cinnamon and not too sweet or heavy and good to the last drop.  Did I say DELISH???

Walk that off while you shop for pearls and laugh at the barking sea lions.

Then a nice stroll back to the hotel for the evening.

Early Tuesday morning I am awake (hey - I'm on Texas time) and...hungry... so I headed out into the crisp air of a sunshiny day to look for breakfast.  One block south and 3 blocks east (trusting my memory - hey be sure you look it up) I found the doors open to an inviting little cafe called the Beach Street Grill with their samples out on the street just to tempt people to come in.  It worked.  Crab Benedict made with fresh dungeness crab, coffee in the Red Coffee Cup.  Breakfast at 7:49 am on a beautiful day - and I'm enjoying being with myself - in San Francisco.

OK now I MUST ride on the Cable Cars.  Across the street from the Argonaut Hotel is one of the Cable Car stops.  I was the first one on about 8am that morning.

Clang Clang.  Off we go.  At the end of the line I had to get off - and watched them turn the car.  I immediately got back in line to get on.  The car got so crowded people had to hang onto the side. If you ever have to do that be sure you don't have your backpack hanging off your back or it could get caught as the cars pass one another. They go very very close.  Also you get very very close to vehicles parked along the street.  How totally neat to see all the people who ride the cable car to work!  Mind boggling for me.  Everyday stuff for them.  I hope the natives do not take their beautiful scenery and weather and hills and shops and food and architecture and bridges and water for granted!!

I finished my morning a few blocks south of the hotel (but a steep climb) at Ghirardelli Square.  Cute shops, great view, and a yummy treat at the little store. "Welcome to Gilla-delli"

San Francisco, I love ya!  I'll be back!!!
