The memorial at Kvivik

We were able to reserve our places and buy our tickets in the Tourist office in Torshavn. To reach Vestmanna you go beyond where the car ferry goes to Vagar. On the way after this there is a slip road to the tiny village of Kvivik. Two things here are of great note. First there are foundations of a Viking age farm. The second is a really sad sight, a grave with a memorial to the crew of a lifeboat that was wrecked. Several were no more than boys and the first five on the list have the same surname and lived in the village of Kvivik. Just imagine the impact of a disaster like this on such a small community.

The road ends at Vestmanna, a larger village where two firms run boat trips to see the cliffs and the seabirds. Wow and more wow!! The cliffs are marvellous and the boat goes into caves, through natural arches and around sea stacks. This would justify the price without a single seabird - but so would the teeming bird life justify the trip if it went along a concrete platform. There were arctic and great skuas, pufins, razorbills, common nad black guillemots, cormorants and shags, kittiwakes, arctic tern and a variety of gulls. It was interesting to sea men scaling the cliffs for puffins, which appear on the menus of most hotels. This might seem sad but puffin was indespensable as part of the diet in the islands for centuries.

A great day.
