The day started with an early morning swim in the pool to freshen up. We then grabbed breaky at the hostel. We headed down to the old port at Thira to walk the 600 steps. Many tourists take the donkey down for a 5E fee though we resisted at the donkeys appeared overworked and underpaid. The walk offers amazing views onto the harbour and beyond to the volcanic island in the distance. We shopped around the port before taking the animal friendly cable car back up for only 4E a person. We then decided to head to Red Beach though only the cliff face even resembled red, the sand was a foot scorching black! After two scorching hours on the beach with no shade we decided to escape the heat and take the 15 min rocky, craggy path back to the bus into town. We found a good restaurant with cheap beers and good food and bedded down to watch England be humiliated yet again by the Germans. Claire showed up to say goodbye before heading onto the sunset with some aussies she met at the beach and we headed to the port for our overnight ferry to Athens. the only sour moment in a great day was the Nazi-esque manager who would not allow us to leave anything on site after checkout without charging for tranfers, luggage storage etc all of which other hostels have not.
