On the way to Ghana

Ghana was a while ago for me. Most of the journal entries have bits and pieces from the journal I kept when I was there. I spent the month of January there between college semesters doing research on children's health. I got to see some of the largest variety of healthcare systems in such a little country. The conversations I had with people in the process were really great too. It was really amazing.

On the way to Ghana

The flight to Ghana was on one of the biggest airplanes I've ever seen.  It was the double-decker, horribly wide plane, and it was packed.  It was strangely comfortable, though, for the amount of space we didn't have.  The first experience I had with time in Africa was in the airport in Baltimore/Washington.  The flight ended up being almost 4 hours late, and it was no big deal except to the Americans that were in a rush to get to Africa.  People were so nice and respectful on the plane.  When we arrived in The Gambia, I felt like a superstar.  I had a skirt on because I had expected it to be rather warm, but we'd left below freezing temperatures in the US.  It was the first time I'd ever walked down a set of stairs to get off of an airplane.  I thought they were only ever used in the movie's by the president!!  Wind blowing through my hair, sunglasses on... yeah, I felt like a star.  We stayed in The Gambia for a few hours, walking around the airport... what there was of it, then jumped back on the plane for Accra.

Nice blog! I landed in Banjul on my way to Liberia from London. A squad of national soldiers was performing drills on the runway tarmac. I've never seen more colorful uniforms :-D
