On the way to Ghana
January 11, 2003
The flight to Ghana was on one of the biggest airplanes I've ever seen. It was the double-decker, horribly wide plane, and it was packed. It was strangely comfortable, though, for the amount of space we didn't have. The first experience I had with time in Africa was in the airport in Baltimore/Washington. The flight ended up being almost 4 hours late, and it was no big deal except to the Americans that were in a rush to get to Africa. People were so nice and respectful on the plane. When we arrived in The Gambia, I felt like a superstar. I had a skirt on because I had expected it to be rather warm, but we'd left below freezing temperatures in the US. It was the first time I'd ever walked down a set of stairs to get off of an airplane. I thought they were only ever used in the movie's by the president!! Wind blowing through my hair, sunglasses on... yeah, I felt like a star. We stayed in The Gambia for a few hours, walking around the airport... what there was of it, then jumped back on the plane for Accra.
