Visiting Tikal, 68 kilometres from Flores. A well known Mayan city and nowadays a large archaeological site. The ruins of Tikal are part of Tikal National Park, which is a declared UNESCO World Heritage since 1979.

Besides the beauty of the jungle, the animals, the ruins (the story how they are built, the science of the Mayans, is incredible) I was very surprised there were hardly any visitors around. It made our visit even more special!!

In Tikal are the highest temples of the area.

The jungle, the ruins, a rather mystical atmosphere!

We walked around the site (with a local guide who was a known bird watcher) for about 4 hours. Very hot (climbing stairs), very interesting!!
