Volcanic Ash Delays - What are the chances?

Day 1 was a travel day. We got to the airport smoothly. Our driver drove really fast. She was a nut. I was running a bit late from work and thought we would be late getting to the airport but in fact we got there about 3.5 hours before the flight was scheduled to leave. Unfortunately, our flight was delayed because of the volcanic ash in Iceland. We were supposed to depart at 6 pm; however it was after 10 pm when we actually departed Newark International Airport.
The flight was about 7 hours. It wasn’t a bad flight, though I thought my mom was going to have a heart attack on the plane because she was panicking every time the plane experienced any turbulence. And it did indeed experience quite a bit of turbulence. \
I slept through most of the flight, though I did get up to use the bathroom once. When I returned to my seat there was a lot of turbulence and the two coffees the stewardess left for my mom and me had spilled all over my seat. Other than that it was an uneventful flight.
At the airport we met other people that were traveling on our tour group, as well. It wound being a very large group. There were almost 50 of us all together. Everyone got along well. I could tell my mom was enjoying herself for the most part (except when the plane hit turbulence). She and Peggy hit it off and they kept laughing and being silly together.
