this is my "why the hell am I up" face

Today we had to wake up bright and early to catch at flight to Sao Paulo to catch a flight to Campo Grande to catch a truck ride into the heart of the Pantanal. I mean early, and I don't do early, but for the promise of an adventure, I guess I did.

So we fly into Campo Grande, no problems, meet up with our guide and driver, no problems, and start heading out in our Land Rover which will be our tank for the next 6, yes SIX hours. Please, let me describe this truck ride...it all starts out nice and dandy with a smooth highway, then you get into a village and the road turns to a dirt road, but still a road, and then all the sudden the "road" becomes pretty much wherever the truck can make it through! We ran into, or I guess through, a group of Pantaneros on a cattle drive with like a million cattle (ok, maybe I'm exaggerating, but seriously...) Through farms, and gates, and cows, and horses, we FINALLY made it to our lodge, probably the cutest place I have ever been!

Did I mention on the way in, not even on an official tour, just on our drive in, we saw caymans, jabarus, hawks, a giant anteater, parrots, and a ton of other birds! Worth every minute of the 12 hour trek!
