We started our day off with a walk along the coast of Sorrento. Then we caught a bus to the train station (note that you need to buy the bus tickets in advance, you can't just get them on the bus). Also walking along the streets in Sorrento could be dangerous there is about 1 foot to walk and cars fly by.
From the train station it was about a 2 minute walk before we were at the entrance to Pompei. We decided to pay for a guided tour so we would see the highlites. We got an old italian guy who was decent but had a strong accent. I was impressed by how large of an area had been excavated.
I was also impressed by the many advances in the city which were done when the Romans arrived.
They had running water but they used lead pipes which caused lead poisoning over the years. Their oringial pipes were clay and we saw some intact in the city. The streets were wide to allow traffic to run in both directions. There were "stepping stones" across the streets for people to walk on since sewage was dumped into the streets at that time.
Many streets were lined with shops which had sliding wooden doors, you can see the groves for them in the stone. They also had prostitution in the City and we saw certain statues and markers that made it clear. The gift shops aren't impressive and somewhat disapointing. After exploring more after our tour we headed back to the cheap sorrento camp ground.
