We awoke quite late and both paid a little for the dark ale we consumed the night before.  This couldn’t damped our spirits or lower our anticipation for the day ahead though. Croatia were to play Brazil in a World Cup group match and walking out into the main square we could already sense the buzz. Flags hung from windows and we could see many football shirts already.

We spent most of the day in the hostel, talking with other travelers and mainly killing time until the match started. A huge screen had been assembled in the main square and the hostel guys prepared us for an equally huge crowd and a wonderful atmosphere. They also announced that everyone in the hostel was to attend the match and that the hostel would be closed until the final whistle!

Hutch and I headed out with a new single serving friend of ours, Ian from Manchester.

The square was already beginning to fill up nicely and the beers were flowing. A game of football had also begun in the square and was hilarious to watch, not least when a rather stout Croat punted the ball as high as he could only for it to land square on the top of a girls head. She just laughed along with everyone else and did well not to spill any of the beer she was holding at the time.

We got a few beers in as the atmosphere grew and the sun came down. The square was now awash with a sea of red and white. I even spotted a dog wearing the national football top of Croatia! The match kicked off and the whole place was buzzing. Croatia played very well against the “best team in the world” and were unlucky to lose 1-0. Still the Croats continued the party after the final whistle, with more beer flowing and fans jumping into the squares water feature!

A group of Croats caught our accents and were delighted to see a couple of Scots supporting Croatia (albeit, Dave being English!).

Darko and the lads.
One of the lads, Darko, told me in very good English how he loves Scotland and especially the film Braveheart! His friends English was less good and extended to only one word; Motherfucker. All good friendly banter and we enjoyed our beer with the lads before they were pulled away for an interview with what looked liked a Japanese T.V crew.

We headed to a club along with the rest of the hostel and saw out the night before all returning for some sleep after a great day. Tomorrow we leave for Sofia and will be very sad to leave Zagreb so soon. The people are fantastic and I hope I get the chance to go back.
