So we packed our bags once again and headed for the train station. A short journey later and we had arrived in Lille and stepping out into the city we could feel the buzz that the World Cup had brought. We had visions of spending ages trying to find lodgings for the night but we got a place first time, right across from the station.
We only had enough time to grab a quick bite to eat before we made our way to the huge screen that had been erected to show the game. The crowd was already bustling and clad in a sea of blue, white and red. We had arrived at the screen fairly early, but had to settle for a place quite far away from the screen. The game eventually kicked off and France got off to a flyer when Zinedine Zidane scored the cheekiest of penalties. However, Italy equalized soon after with a Marco Materazzi header. The game remained deadlocked all the way until full-time and the game went into extra time and a dramatic finale ensued.
We had moved back to the hotel by this time, as the views of the screen were being constantly obstructed. However, we were glad to get off the street as France lost the game on penalties and hero Zinedine Zidane was sent off after an outrageous headbutt! So we watched the crowds head home in disappointment from our hotel balcony, and were very surprised that no trouble broke out. In fact, the French took defeat very well.
After watching the crowds disperse, we decided just to get a beer each and then hit the hay. After all, we were in another new country, with plenty to see the next day.
