Our train pulled into Sofia station at 9.30 and we were immediately accosted by locals demanding to carry our bags for us or take us to a cheap hotel. We managed to shrug them off eventually and hoped that this first impression wouldn't carry on through our whole stay in Sofia. As we left the train station we realised that we had no idea where we were. Should we go left or right from the station? Luckily we bumped into a couple of Kiwis who pointed us in the right direction and also advised us on a decent hotel on the way into town.
We arrived at the hotel no problem with the directions and booked in for one night, as we were booked into Hostel Mostel for the last two nights.
We decided to spend the day wandering Sofia to get a feel for it and to also check out the Alexander Nevsky cathedral. The Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral was beautiful, both inside and outside. We spent quite a while inside pondering over the architecture. After some more wandering and people watching we were starved and needed our dinner.
Our hunt for food brought us to "Happy Bar Grill", a restaurant were the menus looked good but the waitresses looked even better! Sad but true, we went in solely for the lovely looking girls that would be bringing out our food! Luckily for us the food was great. The dishes we had were hard to explain, they were very much a mish mash of different styles of cooking. Cheap, tasty and filling all the same though.
Still a bit tired after our train ride and a day of walking, we headed back to the hotel with a few beers to watch the England game. England scrapped a 1-0 against Trinidad and Tobago, much to the delight of Hutch. Our heads hit the pillow fairly early with some crazy Bulgarian MTV channel playing in the background.
