We stopped at a rest stop going up the hill and it had just turned from heavy rain to really heavy snow.
More of that early snow.
We stopped in Auburn for a bite of lunch at the local In N Out Burger. The girl behind the counter asked if we had just come over the mountains from Reno or were on our way. We told her that we were headed for Reno and she asked if we had chains, because it was snowing very heavily up there and chains were required. I have never been anywhere that I needed chains, so we had to find an auto parts store and buy some. The folks there were informative and helpful and even showed the CalTrans cameras that are placed several places up the hill. Yep, we were going to hit plenty of snow and ice. So with new chains for the can we headed on up the hill.
The heavy rain turned to snow at about the 3,000 foot level and it wasn't long until we had to chain up.
This shot shows better just how much it was snowing.
After getting the chains on we pulled back out onto the road and got no more than about a quarter mile before the two lanes of traffic came to a complete stop. We sat in the heavily snowing same spot for nearly 4 hours!! Seems there were lots of wrecks on up ahead and they needed to stop traffic so they could clean it all up. By the end of the time the snowing had nearly stopped and we poked along at about 25 miles per hour all the way up and over the mountain.
