Today started out with a real trip highlight. After not being able to get into the Golden Spike Tower because we were too late, we were up nice and early today to make sure we had time to make a visit. So at about 6:45 a.m. when my eyes opened I jumped from bed, made as much noise as I felt necessary to let my wife know I was up and we showered and dressed and went down for a nice breakfast. This included small egg folds like an omelet but with nothing inside, a sausage patty, waffles, biscuits and gravy, cereal, sweet rolls, juices and of course coffee. And even though we got to talking with several of the other guests we were still early enough to get out to the tower when it opened at 9a.m..
We spent a full hour at the Golden Spike Tower, which overlooks the largest freight classification yard in the world. And up on the eighth floor a volunteer answered questions and gave a wonderful description of what we were seeing and how it all worked. He had worked for the railroad for many years knew about all there was to know about the yard, the engines, the cars, the loads, and everything else you could imagine. I got lots of pictures and could have taken more.
