More weather to deal with.

Early in the day the clouds were just open enough to see the blue sky here and there.

Today we got started a little later than yesterday. We needed to stop by our son's home in Sparks to drop off some things we had brought for him. Unfortunately we had gotten in too late last night to make a visit and he went to work at 6 am this morning, so we didn't get to see him.  But his partner was there and his two wonderful dogs.  We got to scratch their ears and give them some loving.  Wait, now we are talking about the two dogs, not Jeff.  He got a hug from each of us and we talked for a little while.

Then we had to stop and get new windshield wiper blades for the car.  The snow yesterday had done a number on the old ones and so another quick stop was made to pick and install new ones.

But they looked like they meant business ahead.

The weather this morning is cloudy and pretty cool. Maybe only in the lower forties and very windy.  The  storm that we had fought with all afternoon yesterday had moved on east and now we were behind it again.  So all day today the clouds got thicker and darker as we caught up with the storm.  I guess storms don't travel at 75 mph, which is the speed limit in Nevada.  And soon we were at the back end of it and getting rained on again.  We could look to either side and see that the snow had fallen pretty far down and nearly to level where we were driving, but it would rain for a while and then stop.  We were up over the 5,000 ft level several times and neared the 6,000 foot once with no snow coming down but we knew that there was one much higher summit to make before the end of the day.

We always take pictures of tunnels

We stopped at a Truck stop before getting to the highest summit and asked about the road conditions.  "Oh, you'll need chains for sure up there!" the young guy behind the counter said.  "It's been snowing all day up there!"

So we knew that the last 50 miles was going to take  us more than an hour.  We'd have to stop and put on the chains again, or hopefully find someone to help us.  Then drive no more 30 mph while we had them on.  And of course stop to take the chains off again.  A real pain.

Off we went, Judy with a new coffee mug with a free fill of French Vanilla Cappacino, and me with the information that would slow us down.  This mountain summit was at 6,987 ft., and we had seen lots of snow already at the lower levels.

Even train tunnels
But as we drove, the rain stayed rain, and the temperature only got down to 37, both of which were a good sign.  No ice anywhere, just snow along the edge.  And on up we went and finally the summit came into view and we were still doing fine.  Such a relief!!  On over we went and down the other side and slightly less than the posted speed.  Better safe than sorry if we did hit any ice.

So we pulled into West Wendover at 5:30 pm our time. But I think because we are now on the edge of Utah they have the clocks set an hour ahead.

We are staying the night at the Best Western - Salt Flats Inn.
