The Festival of Tearjerkers is an annual festival in Tilburg, that celebrates music in the so-called genre ‘Levenslied’, or ‘Tearjerker’. A ‘Levenslied’ (literally: life’s song) is often sentimental, with topics close to the daily life of ordinary men and women.
Originally, tearjerkers are popular with lower-class people who enjoy the songs who mainly are about hard life at sea, alcoholism, cheating husbands or wives and tragic love. However, since the eighties, tearjerkers are (mainly on occasions!) enjoyed by all members of society. One of these occasions is The Festival of the Tearjerkers in Tilburg.
During two days there will be several stages in the heart of the city centre, where well-known and unknown Dutch artists perform their songs. There is always a huge audience, either standing in front of the stage or sitting outside on terraces enjoying a beer.
In 2010, the Festival of the Tearjerkers is on Saturday the 5th of June and Sunday the 6th of June.
