Flemish graffiti

The resurgence of the issue of Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde is certainly sparking debate, and perhaps in places you wouldn't expect. On my train home a Flemish nationalist had drawn a Flemish lion and wrote "Vlaanderen Boven! Splits B.H.V!" ("Flanders on top! Divide Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde!").

A second respondent added "+ Wallonie", to state "Flanders and Walloon on top!" and crossed out "splits B.H.V!" to replace it with "Belgie eenheid!" ("Belgium united!").

A third commentator crossed out "splits B.H.V!" yet again, writing "racisme" and:

"Belgie is niet
Zonder Wallonie
En Belgie is niet Wallonie
Zonder Vlaanderen, Samen
Zijn jullie Belgie!"

("Belgium is not
Without Walloon
And Belgium is not Walloon
Without Flanders, Together
You are Belgium!")

It is nice to see graffiti artists take an active involvement in political discussions.

Well the government is certainly prone to collapse due to this type of bickering, but on the ground it is more like the rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney. By European standards the Dutch-speakers and French-speakers within Belgium have had quite a harmonious history, the problem is probably more that just right now the economic divide happens to clash with the demographic divide.

I thought Switzerland was a complicated little federation, but whenever I read about/talk to Belgians it makes me think Belgium is like a dysfunctional arranged marriage!

Exactly, I'm sure sure there are racists that are in favour of saving the rainforests, but that doesn't mean I should be against it.

There's not a lot if room for moderation in most debates, if you're in favour of stricter banking regulation you're a communist, if you have some concerns with the current immigration politics you're a racist, if you want to pull the Belgian troops out of afgsnistan you're a free-loading coward and if you want to leave them there you're a war mongerer, sigh :)
