reading the morning paper ;)

As it was a work day, the workers got the first showers and then we got ready and packed up.  I was leaving today and Miwako was bringing me to Shinagawa Station to meet my relatives for the next journey.  Her mother made me a banana smoothie for breakfast (with cabbage and olive oil) - it is supposed to be really good for you and I only tasted the banana.  Miwako had natto - which is fermented soybeans, mixed with raw egg, over rice.  I opted out of that one. I guess raw eggs are safe to eat over here, but I didn't want to risk it with a long train ride ahead of me.  After that, we stepped out into the POURING rain and walked a half block to catch a cab.

It took forever to get to the train station.

We thought it would be easier to take a cab than lug a suitcase on a train packed full of commuters.  But since it was raining, traffic was very slow.  They drive on the left side of the street here, similar to Britain, and we were always dodging cabs and delivery trucks stopped in the left lane.  We finally got to the station with about half an hour until the train left.  Whew!   Miwako helped me find my cousin and get my tickets so I could get through.  We said some quick hellos, because Miwako and my relatives remembered each other from her year with us.  Then we said a quick goodbye, since we all had trains to catch.

We were taking the bullet train (Shinkansen) to Kyoto for a couple days, then on to Hiroshima for a couple of days.  My cousin Linda had set everything up for us and I was happy I didn’t have to do much more than follow along and pay my way.  The train ride was about 1.5-2 hours to Kyoto and Linda and I spent most of it talking.  It was really gloomy outside with rain, low clouds, and fog.  We couldn’t see much of the scenery.
