Today is the day of the gig! We're seeing Children of Bodom at the Pakkahuone tonight to celebrate the lead singer Alexi Laiho's birthday, so today is to be a low key event. Fortunately we were blessed with beautiful sunny weather to enjoy a leisurely stroll around the city centre without our winter coats, though to be honest most of the pre-gig build-up consisted of sampling the local beers in a rather brilliant little rock pub named 'Amadeus'. (Review below) I have a feeling we'll be spending more of our holiday in here! ;-D An evening meal in the form of Hesburger (Finlands answer to McDonalds and to be honest much tastier in my opinion, not that I am a connoiseur of fast foods but it hits the spot once you have a bit of booze inside you!)
The gig itself was amazing. Children of Bodom are a fantastic live band though this probably wasn't the tightest and most technical of performances, you can tell they haven't been in action for a few months but I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. The small venue lent itself to a great, intimate atmosphere. The gig opening with the crowd singing 'Happy Birthday' to Alexi in Finnish! The setlist was a pleasant surprise, they threw in a couple of tunes which they don't play as frequently as others which went down well with the crowd. In a word: Fantastic.
