Urumqi city centre

Urumqi is not really a tourist town, it's a thoroughly modern and very Chinese city, but as we need to change planes here on the way to Beijing we feel we should at least stay overnight and see what the city has to offer.

In fact Urumqi it is not at all a bad place.  It probably has the best road system of anywhere we have visited in China and the centre is reasonably easy to walk around.  Some of the smaller streets even seem to have a European feel.  The only real "sight" here is the museum so we dash down there immediately after arriving and though it should be open today when we arrive for some reason it is closed to visitors.  Oh well! Instead we take a walk in the Hong Shan park.  This is a park for the local Chinese and is primarily a fun fair with a big-wheel, ghost train, merry-go-round, a boating lake and a couple of temples.  The view across the city from the temple is good.  We don't go on any of the rides though the goldfish fishing is very tempting - if only we had a portable aquarium.
