Thunderbird Bellavista Hotel in Lima

When we made our reservations at the Thunderbird Hotel Bellavista, they had indicated that they do provide shuttle service to the airport but not from the airport;  however, we found out that this free shuttle service to the airport is only available on a very limited basis and their pick up times did not match our departure schedule.  Upon request to the manager of the hotel and deep negotiations, they agreed to provide us free shuttle service to the airport at 10AM.  Sometimes it pays to be persistent and there's power in numbers as well (we were four people).

We checked into Lima's airport for our departure flight at 12:50 PM to Quito on Lan Airlines.

The Mercure Hotel in Quito
We had to pay the departure tax ($30) before going through security.  We arrived in Quito at around 3PM.  We were met by our pre-arranged taxi driver who first took us to Zenith Travel, our Galapagos land tour company, so that we could leave a suitcase in their office and pick up our travel documents for the Galapagos Islands.  There I met Lilliana, the young lady from Zenith Ecuador who I have been  working with for the past months to arrange this trip to the Galapagos.  We were then taken to our hotel, the Mercure.  After checking in and dropping off our suitcases, we decided to do some shopping at the nearby craft market (one block from the Mercure).  After shopping we ate supper at the restaurant in the hotel.  Both in Lima as well as Quito, there's a noticeable huge presence of armed police officers around.  The Mariscal district is known as the tourist area and is said to be much safer than the downtown area (Old Quito) especially at night.  The local currency in Ecuador is the US$ so we did not need to change the currency.  When purchases are made however, the vendors tend to want to give you Ecuadoran currency but you can request your change in US$ instead.  The taxi fare from the airport to the Mariscal district costs US$5 while the taxi fare from Old Quito (downtown) to the Mariscal costs approximately US$2.
