Snowy Range Ski Area

Today marked our anniversary and to celebrate our thirteen years of married life, my lovely and I planned to go skiing with our two young boys.

Growing up in the Caribbean, I did not learn how to ski until I was about 25 when I took a ski trip to Colorado.  On that occasion, with the exception of the first day where I surveyed every inch of snow at close proximity, I had enjoyed the outdoor activity and looked forward to the exercise with great anticipation.  Since then, my lovely and I have skied a few times all being in Colorado.  This trip would be our first in Wyoming.

Our two young boys had not skied before this trip and so they were going to go through lessons.  They were progressing nicely.  The elder of the two was more advanced.  By the end of the first day, the elder was able to ski the blue courses with my lovely and I.  The younger one was having a more difficult time of it.  He was not ready to embrace hockey style turns and stops rather persisting with the wedge or triangle ski approach.  He consequently greeted the snow quite often and therefore chose to return to the easier slopes.

We started out our day with a hearty breakfast at our hotel.

We had to wake up the boys which is rare but also a sign that they were depleted from yesterday’s skiing.  Once we had our fill of fruits, cereal, coffee and eggs, off we went to Snowy Range.

Today was going to be the last day the Snowy Range site was open for the season and we were planning to be there from start to finish.  The day before, the boys had enjoyed their ski school and each were advancing to the intermediate level of class today.  It was our hope to address a blue slope, the four of us, by the end of the day.

It was a wonderful time of picturesque skiing.  I felt comfortable enough in day two with the blues to give a black a go.

I found a black course that did appear to be too suicidal but after falling within the first nine meters, I was able to gather myself to a stand and reconsideration.  After proper reconciliation, I restructured my approach and managed the rest of the way without falling.  However, I confess that it was harder and required much more effort.  I further concluded that this was my vacation and not the Olympic trials, therefore I need not overextend my abilities as I was not planning a relocation to Norway.  As such, I soon returned to the comfort and ease of the blues and the companionship of my lovely.  After all, I wanted to drive home and not be carted off.

Soon it was lunch time.  Time does fly when you are having fun.  We gathered together for a meal at the lodge and the boys let us know how they ski school went.  The afternoon was ours to be together.  We returned to skiing and surveyed the improvement of the little alpines with their newly acquired poles.

They were proud to show us their new moves and even the little one managed some improved turning abilities.  The balance of the day was spent on the blue courses.  The last run of the afternoon, no one family member fell.  It was a success.

With smiling faces and flushed cheeks we ended our day of skiing.  We were the last ones on the run.  Only the members of the ski patrol were behind us, herding the guests towards the lodge.  Their graceful skiing prowless unmatched by ours.  To have grown up in such surroundings would have been a treat.  We thought the location beautiful and relished in our own accomplishments.  We did well enough.  Now off to the hotel, pool and hot tub.  To continue our anniversary celebration.
