We´re in a boat! At the Retiro Park

It was time for a break.  We have been walking non stop for several days it feels like.  Even when you take the metro train there´s a lot of walking through the station.   Sometimes I wonder if it would just be easier to walk to a destination instead of shuffling around in a metro station.

We decided to take a rest today.  We slept in after partying for a bit too long last night, and after breakfast went to the Retiro Park.  This is a huge park in Madrid which had a large lake that people would walk around and boat in.  For 4.55€ we rented a boat for 45 minutes.  It was just a small row boat so it was easy to navagate.  We did like the locals and rowed out to the center and layed in the sun.

Kim and I read our books, talked, and relaxed.  It was nice.  We followed our maritime adventure with some lunch and a trip to the Temple de Debod.

In 1968 Egypt gave the ancient temple to Spain as a gift for assistance in rescuing monuments in Egypt that would be damaged by a rising Nile river.  The temple is now a free exhibit that is well documented for visitors.  The walk there was a bit long, even from a metro station so we took our time.

Inside there are actually two levels.  On the main level you can walk between the small prayor rooms, and on the second floor is a model showing the original location of the temple and more information about it.

We returned to our room at about 7:30pm.  Everything in Spain is late.

While there are things (i.e. the markets) which start early, most everything else starts much later.  Many eating places will even close from 3 until 8.  Sleeping in, and staying up late, is the best way to see Spain at a relaxed pace...otherwise you would need to get into the siesta schedule which I don´t think I´m able to do.  That would entail getting up early, then napping in the early afternoon, then getting up again and staying up late.  I can only wake up once each day, it´s just too much work.

We headed back out to the Cava Bajo street and had a new round of good tapas.  During our day we realized that a major final soccor championship is going to take place here in Spain tomorrow.  Visitors were already starting to arrive.  Between this influx and it being a Friday the bars were packed and we had fun hanging out at the bar and eating various tapas.  Unfortunatly we keep finding the same food in different places.  Tonight we found something a little different but I expect that tomorrow we´ll put a little more effort into finding something more unique.
