In the morning I walk along dusty roads, past children kneading cow shit into a discus shape. At the bus station I buy a ticket to Deshnoke and after 45 minutes reach my destination. From the bus stop in Deshnoke it´s only a five minute walk to the Karna Mata Mandir, the Rat Temple. Once you enter its grounds, you immediately see loads of rats swarming around and drinking greedily from pots filled with milk. As you wander around without your shoes on, you step on rat and pigeon shit scattered on the chess-board like black and white marble floor.

The temple, built in the 17th century is dedicated to a 15th century female mystic Karniji, who is worshipped as an incarnation of Durga. The mice and rats are revered and fed with sweets and milk in the belief that they are reincarnated saints. That´s India for you…

A lonely rat explores my feet and bites my toe, then hurries away. And then, just before I was about to leave again, excited shouts from an Indian crowd. I hurry to where they are standing and there in a dark corner, barely visible, sits a white rat. Spotting a white rat at the Karni Mata Temple is supposed to bring good luck. Who would have thought I would ever feel happy about seeing a rat.
