We flew USAirways through Charlotte to arrive in Puerto Rico. Our flight out of Denver left at 1 am and I had every intention of sleeping both on the flight to Charlotte and for the 3 hours we were laid over there. However, the airport in Charlotte was freezing! Absolutely freezing with air conditioning. Considering that it was snowing in Denver when we left, I was surprised to find that Charlotte, at least at the airport, was so much colder. I had to open my suitcase and find some extra clothes to put on in order to stave off hypothermia!
When we arrived in Puerto Rico it was beautiful and warm....ok it was HOT HOT HOT!
We arrived at the hotel, showered and took off for Old San Juan. Our hotel is the Sandy Beach hotel in the resort/tourist district of San Juan.
Old San Juan is the original capital city and it is bookended by the two primary forts used to defend Puerto Rico. We were starving so we walked through Columbus Park to the Cafe Puerto Rico where we ate an appetizer of fried cheese, not too good, with guava sauce, very yummy, and a main dish of Relleno Montolongo (???) Mine was seasond chicken in a bowl made out of mashed, fried plantain and Brian's was fried pork in the same plantain. It was terrific! The plantain is yummy, both soft and sweet with a bit of crispiness and the chicken was well-seasoned and tender. I also had some sangria.
After eating we went back out to Columbus Park and wandered through the art festival and listened to a local band play for awhile. We decided to tour the Castillo San Cristobol, which was very interesting and had some amazing views of the harbor and ocean.
We were exhausted after our long day of traveling so we got some beers and snacks and headed back to the hotel. On the way back we decided to sit on the beach and watch the waves and the sun went down. We took a video with our new camera of the waves and Brian will put it on his blog. What a great day!
