One of the highlights of Antwerp, for tourists and locals alike. Established in 1843, the architecture is nearly as interesting as the animals. Photos were taken when we went there for my sister's 30th birthday, on easter monday.
The most popular animals are the Indian elephants. Especially since the birth of Kai-Mook last year, the first ever baby elephant to be born in Belgium, which caused a whole lot of whoopla in the media. The much awaited birth was broadcasted live on the zoo's website and on a big screen outside. Of course this means that unless you visit on a quiet time, you will barely be able to get a glimpse of them through the huge crowd.
I personally think the inside parts are the most interesting, like the reptile house, the aquarium and the night-time animals. My baby niece, on her first visit to the zoo where she didn't spend the vast majority of the time sleeping, especially enjoyed the birds, probably because of their bright colours. Monkeys are inside as well. This means that you can still enjoy a visit to the zoo on rainy or cold days.
