The Effect of just One Minute Late

Ciao raced along the interstate, making up time, clicking down the GPS anticipated time of arrival:  4:11, 4:05, 4:00!  Arrival at Churchill Downs!  It's 4:00!  Plenty of time to see the 4:59 pm last horse race of the day at the home of the famous Kentucky Derby- HOORAY!

What?!  The race is running right now?  That's the Announcer calling the 4:59 pm race?  Right NOW??  HUH???

Time zone change!!  It's really now 5pm.

From our start in Missouri, through Illinois and Indiana, and finally into Louisville, KY somewhere there was a time zone change to Eastern time.

Churchill Downs
And so we hereby missed the last horse race of the day at Churchill Downs.  WAAAA!!!!!  (Sob, cry, sputter!)

The parking guy felt sorry for us and kindly let us park in the Preferred Parking, suggesting we go inside to walk around and see things.  So we did and assuaged our whimpering with visits to the track from the Millionaires Row dining area and fantastic viewing seats.

But we didn't really actually start to feel better until we visited the Churchill Downs Gift Shop.  After getting a precious pewter mint jelup cup, mint jelup syrup, a riding crop for Lia and some gifts, did we finally feel better.  MUCH better!

This morning we visited UNESCO World Heritage site of Cohokia, just 6 miles from our St. Louis Casino Queen RV Park.

Churchill Downs
It is the largest archeological site north of Mexico.  Who knew?!  It was very well done with a good movie, interactive museum, and free guided tour of Monk's Mound.  That's the largest of the mounds where the Chief lived and was buried, and the only mound we were allowed to climb.  Fascinating!

After Churchill Downs, we had a few issues that caused great stress.  Low on gas, turned the wrong way out of gas station, 5pm Louisville traffic, a great crashing sound like a bag of metal bones by my driver's door while driving down the highway (what was THAT??!!), and a low battery with "low amp" light with no improvement at highway speeds.  Sigh.

But we found the Lake Shelby campground in Shelbyville and for $12 had electric and a nice site along the lake.  Someone had kindly led us along the road to the campground.  Mr. Bob in the office was nice.  And A/C was a real blessing.  We played volleyball in their sand court and decided to worry about the rest in the morning.  It was a peaceful night.
