7.8.10 Parlee Beach PP & PEI

Parlee Beach is “world famous” for it’s lovely beach, so we parked in our Parlee Beach parking lot, to get out of the campsite for the next campers, and tromped down the street half a mile to the beach.  It was LOVELY.  Perfect soft sand, lovely waveless and warm water, lifeguards on duty, nice visitors from all over Canada, showers and bathhouse, and Canteen for snacks.  A delightful beach morning full of sun and a perfect warm, but not hot, cloudless day.  Perfect.

Then we tromped back to Ciao about noon, made a quick lunch and took off.

In just 2 hours we crossed the Confederation Bridge to PEI.

Confederation Bridge to PEI
It is 7 miles long and the “longest bridge over ice-covered waters in the world!”  It was really windy today, but a tailwind over the bridge, thank goodness!  I was white-knuckling it for just a little while until I relaxed and it was a fine, 2-lane road.  I pity the person who runs out of gas on it though as it doesn’t have even a car’s width for an emergency lane.  But we fortunately witnessed no issues.

Hooray!  We made it to Prince Edward Island, our third of three provinces comprising the Canadian Maritimes (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI)!

After stopping at the Visitor’s Information Center, which is a little desk in a huge gift shop, we admired from afar the quaint touristy buildings that held Anne of Green Gables items and hit the road.  We had a mission to get to Cavendish to visit Anne’s area and were under a timeframe.

Why the rush?  Well there is a HUGE festival going on right now!  Some of the biggest names in country music are playing a 5-day concert right here in Cavendish right now!  Taylor Swift is Saturday night, Keith Urban and Glorianna are tonight, Lady Antebella and about 21 other artists are playing!  What timing!  Sadly, we are not going to the concert because tickets are about $100 each a day and it just would not be worth it for all of us.

We were happy that traffic in Cavendish was not a bad as we feared this afternoon.  It was harried around the Green Gables site that Parks Canada runs, where I think the concert is behind, but otherwise not too busy. However, all the RV parks and National Parks were full or close.

We found a Passport America campground between Cavendish and the Blakely National Park campground called Bayside.

They initially didn’t believe that we really were showing up without a reservation!  Really, we are!  J

But Michael, the owner, kindly found a site for a night, offering water and only 15 amp service (everything electric but the air conditioner, and no tank emptying, neither of which we need anyway.)  Total cost $15.50.  Hooray!  And there is a lovely pool, laundry, showers, lovely guests and sunset, all of which we have enjoyed here!  Compared to $51 at the National Park, this is a delightful find!

We got good information in Cavendish at Information and plan to enjoy some Anne sites in the morning, although Cavendish is not really a village, since it is an agricultural area.

We did stop before arriving to buy some ADL milk from PEI and try some delicious Cows Ice Cream.  I bought some PEI potato chips, made of their famous potatoes.

I enjoyed a great talk at the pool with a Mom with 2 kids, named Jeannine, who has lived all over Canada as a military wife.  Such conversations are priceless and add such depth to our trip.

A lovely day in a beautiful place!
