Fun lunch with Evelyn & Steve

7.18.10 St. Anthony to Hawks Bay, NFL

Lunch today with Evelyn and Steve at the popular Lighthouse Restaurant was great fun! Although the waitress seemed to be starring in a Saturday Night Live skit, it only added to our quiet amusement.  We had a delightful conversation, as quiet as we could, since the 6 other restaurant tables appeared to be observing “Silent Day.”  It was all we could do to escape before erupting with laughter.

The nice Lighthouse Keeper, who was outside, then invited us to climb to the top of the short lighthouse.  He was very helpful with area info.  Great time!

It was SO COLD though that our teeth chattered from the lighthouse railing as we gazed over the bay while he told us that there were no whales this year, nor icebergs, and regaled us with tales of  the plentitude of years past.

Ahhhh, woe are we on the whales and icebergs quest.

Visiting with Evelyn and Steve was so fun that it was hard to bid them goodbye.  They’re not restricted by time and it will be fun to see where they head next.

We, on the other hand, drove through thunderstorms back down the coast, past the ferry to Labrador, and ended up at the River of Ponds Park just south of Hawks Bay.  For $21 (electric & water) we are overlooking the River of Ponds.  It looks like a big lake and is very lovely.

It is MUCH warmer just 150 miles south of St. Anthony’s where we are now.  In fact, we have the fans running.  Much better!

The sun has come out and it’s a delightful evening except for the swarming black flies and mosquitoes.

But not to worry!  We have green head nets.  While our neighbor yelled out that we’d live, we laughed back that he was jealous and we have scars from our last black fly experience!  Ha!

Our Verizon Air Card does not have signal here and the “internet” advertised on the campground sign involves… are you ready… hooking our computer to their phone line for dial-up internet.  Remember dial up?  Ugh.  We are almost, but not quite, that desperate for internet and will try tomorrow.  It has been difficult, as one might expect to find both electricity and internet at the same time.  It’s the price we pay for adventure exploring!

This morning, I emailed Gros Morne NP to reserve the 1pm Western Brook Tour. We plan to pick the tickets up after the 1.8 mile walk to the dock.  Let’s hope this plan works!

Until then…
