6.9.10 Jacksonport State Park, AR to St. Louis, MO

From 8 am to 2:30pm we rolled thru the rolling, green Ozark Mountains to St. Louis.

Casino Queen has an attached RV park with full hookups ($29) and nice facilities.

After setting up, we took the bikes off the back of Ciao and rode the 2 miles to the Gateway Arch!  The first bridge across the Mississippi River is the Eads Bridge, which we traversed to get to the green park grounds of the Arch.

A brilliant, fabulous day of sun that was refreshingly hot, but not deadly.

The National Park Service runs the Gateway Arch and has the experience down to an art.  It was not busy by 4pm and we got right up on the next tram (every 5 minutes).

The little capsules that take you up to the top of the Arch hold 5 people and gently lurch to level as it goes up.  660 feet up in 4.5 minutes and only 3 minutes to get down.

Take some wipes with you if you go in the afternoon, for the windows are smudged by little faces, but we did find some clear places for  the camera and great pictures.  We could see Ciao Baby from there!

For a few extra dollars, we enjoyed a fun, dramatic film on the attached big screen theatre.  It was a 45-minute movie on Lewis and Clark expedition, which started in St. Louis.  Since we’d also been to the Lewis & Clark National Park in Ft. Stevens, OR, this was interesting.  Charles also read the book of their journals, so it’s fun to see the learning come full circle.

Then we enjoyed food and sunshine along the waterfront outside the Arch and finally biked back across the Eads Bridge back to the Casino Queen RV Park.

Our main purpose in coming here is to see the UNESCO site tomorrow, but we sure enjoyed the Gateway to the West!
