In advance, as we told we were going to Wuppertal (North Rhine-Westphalia) for four days people said âWuppertal, whatâs going on there?â.
Wuppertal is one of the cities in the German âRuhrgebietâ, Ruhr area or Ruhr Metropolis, a big industrial and urbanized area. Not known for its landscape beauty or picturesque cities!
Shortly after booking this weekend we found out that the Ruhr area is one of the European capitals of culture this year (www.ruhr2010.de, in German and English!).
After a great breakfast (buffet style) we took the car to visit Wuppertal. As we asked at the reception âhow to drive to Wuppertal city centreâ the girl told us, turn to the right, straight up, and there you areâŚâŚ.. maybe we went wrong ;-) But we had to ask for directions. As soon as we found out âElberfeldâ would be our goal our navigation system was in charge again J
Wuppertal was found in 1929 by merging 7 cities. Now a days Wuppertal-Elberfeld (Elberfeld is one of the former cities) is the main city centre. One of the main sights is the monorail (Schwebebahn), which was out of order because of major maintenance.
Elberfeld is not very special, but it is nice to see a regular town! We did some shopping, walked around and returned to our hotel to enjoy the spa!
