Matt and Lynne discussing something or other
About the English Seaside
The English seaside is in decline. It is a truism of life on these isles that we spend an inordinate amount of time boarding planes to take us to sunnier places like Spain and Greece because we can't rely on our weather and their is nowhere nice to go.

Obviously, this is bollocks, but I fear we do not help ourselves. As a nation, we're obsessed with possessing property.  We're not content with a single place in which to live, so we buy places by the sea to go an visit for a couple of weeks a year.  In doing so, we create ghost towns and then complain about the lack of infrastructure. Nobody can run a business because there aren't enough people around.  Locals are priced out of the housing market and the only ones that seem to go on holiday in Britain are the poor.
What the English Seaside is all about

Clacton is a prime example of the malaise.  It has a pier devoted to penny arcades and ten-pin bowling. Yeah, it is fun for an hour to waste a few two-pence pieces in the futile pursuit of accumulating more (unless you're Lynne, in which case you do turn a profit). And yeah, ten-pin bowling is fun for a game, espcially when one is inept.  But that is it apart from a few shops selling old tat, fish and chip restaurants and greasy spoon cafes.  Christ knows what the smoking ban will do to these places.

There are some nice bits around, but the properties look empty.  I'm sure there must be something somewhere, but I didn't see any up-market restaurants; just rows of tea shops catering for bus loads of pensioners.

They're discussing letting the sea defences in Clacton fall into disrepair.  If the waves don't reclaim the place, market conditions will.
