This Ain't The Mainland Y'know

Now, I have crossed The Solent (the little bit of water between the Isle of Wight (IoW) and the mainland) many times in my life, but until this day always with a vehicle in tow.  In fact my first big motorbike trip involved just this journey.  However, this is the first time I visited as a foot passenger and I am going to be controversial - the trip was great.

"British" people frequently berate the quality of our public transport.  I highlight "British" on purpose though because I actually think most of these people live in and around London.  And for those, perhaps they have a legitimate concern because the infrastructure around the capital is not 21st century.  Yet my journey was great.  I travelled on a lovely modern train from London Victoria past some fabulous countryside, Arundel Castle being the highlight.  I got ejected at the end of the line onto the Portsomouth Harbour station platform. I then walked about 100 metres, bought a ticket for the FastCat passenger sevice to IoW for £17 return and 15 minutes later was blasting across The Solent in a catamaran.  Quarter of an hour after that, I was on Ryde Pier looking at a ridiculously painted old tube train running from the pierhead all the way to the town of Shanklin

When I compare the ease of travel with some of those Central American journies...
