large hill near Toluca
DAY 1 - ARRIVAL IN MEXICO: After a long 10 hour layover at the Houston airport, I made my way to Toluca which is not too far from Mexico City(1-2 hour drive depending on destination/traffic). I chose this as it is a smaller airport, less crowded and easier for immigration. Big airports take forever to get out of (bigger planes take longer to unload, long way to walk, baggage , immigration, etc) and I was told Mexico City Airport would be very crowded and immigration very time consuming. Also I got a ticket for about the same price as would have been for mexico city(I just clicked the box for any airport close to Mexico City when I searched on kayak).
comfy bus seats with movies in espanol playing
So we landed and no other planes had been in recently I guess because the area was empty and I was the 5th person to go through immigration from our plane = only a 2 minute wait :) I then grabed my bags just 25-50 feet away from the immigration desk and I put them through an x-ray machine and then I push a button. If its green you are good to go, if its red then you got selected for random bag check. Yay I got green :D While on the plane and in line, I met a nice guy who was there on business for Nissan and used to live in Toluca. He gave me a suggestion for what taxi to use and helped me with that process, and soon I was off to the bus station. My taxi driver Ricardo was very nice and friendly and was very safe but also got me to the bus station very quick.
view from my room when i arrived
On the advice of my friend, I took a specific bus company = AUTOVIAS. The people are helpful and the bus was comfy, after being on cramped airplanes, the super reclining seats and extra leg room was a nice touch(also was nice that unlike Colombian bus rides the driver took an easier pace and the roads were less winding). It is a 4 hour bus ride from Toluca to Morelia, so they played 2 movies during the trip. They were in spanish but I got the idea(since they were silly comedy types), also I slept a bit and I helped a girl with her english pronunciation for some stuff she was studying, and I gave her the english names for a map she had of the human anatomy, fingers, toes, etc. They gave us a small snack and drink as well. I arrived in Morelia , said adios to my new friends and I met my friend Monica who was waiting for me.
my view when i wake up
We then drove to her family's residence, where I was introduced to her parents and had a nice visit for a bit(not easy since my spanish is terrible) We then ate a nice traditional meal(the soup was awesome the way Monica suggested I make it with slivers of onion, a few small pieces of green chili for spice and some lime) and then I headed off to the place I was staying and called it a night after some unpacking. After 24 hours of planes, airports, bus/bus stations I was ready for a comfy bed :) **added 1 year later = wow i really miss that soup as I read and think about it again :) **
Day 2 - A RELAXED DAY: After 1 day of travel I needed a day to chill and unwind and i took the opportunity to finally talk in person with Monica, and a bit with her family. So we just chilled most of the day and then at night we went to a cool coffee shop to meetup with Monicas friend Linda.
