SickKids Foundation Summer BBQ
Week 2 in Toronto left me feeling more settled in with the team at SickKids - and possibly a bit more useful! It's amazing how much the nursing staff do here in Canada compared to at home though - they're trained to do most procedures - bloods, NG tubes, ivs etc, so I've not had a chance to practice the practical stuff. Not that I envy them having kids throwing up all over them as they try to put down an NG... Last week saw more ED clinics and ward work and some Young Families clinics, where I got to do some 'real' paeds and carry out some newborn baby checks on the babies born to teen mums. There's been plenty of teaching too, so all is well placement-wise. Last thursday was the annual summer BBQ, which was really nice too.

This weekend we had a break from the 'squalor' of halls, as Alex's ER friend was away for the weekend and let us stay in his posh hotel room at the Delta Chelsea hotel opposite the hospital. We took full advantage of the pool and roof deck - and the TV, a rare luxury - as well as the bathroom - my favourite. We explored the Harbourfront and went to the cinema again on Saturday (this time it was lady's choice - although I think Alex enjoyed 'Hairspray' more than he's letting on...) and Sunday we went to our first baseball game - Toronto Blue Jays vs. Seattle Mariners - which was great fun and Toronto won 8-0 (3 home runs!). It was a bit dramatic, but I enjoyed it all the same - we had the obligatory hot dog and popcorn bag that practically came up to my waist, but I only just stopped myself from buying one of those foam pointing hands... Go Jays!

Sunday night we went out for dinner to a Persian restaurant and today we were back to placement for Week 3 - this week is the changeover for all the med students and residents, so we might go out with Peter, my placement buddy, at some point and maybe out with the residents at the end of the week. It'll be sad to see them go - especially since that may make me the most 'senior' junior member of the team for my last week... :S

Hope you are all well - lots of love, speak soon
