Hello - I don't have many Travbuddy friends who can actually see this blog yet, but for those of you who can, here's an update on our first few days in Canada!
We arrived in Toronto two days ago on a very nice BA flight from Manchester via London Heathrow and were picked up from the airport by Alex's friend, Maher and his mum in their v.big and v.flash car, who very kindly drove us to our hostel downtown in the middle of rush hour. We're staying at one of the University of Toronto halls of residence called New College, which is very basic but no worse than Halifax hall! On the first night we went straight to bed at 9pm Toronto time, as it was about 2am England time, and then woke up the next morning at 7am for a halls breakfast of cereal, muffins, toast, pancakes etc (complete with maple syrup!) - obviously not all at once.
We then went for an explore to find the hospital that we'll be working at next month, the train station we'll be leaving from tomorrow morning and of course the huge shopping centre (Eaton centre). We then went up the CN tower - the tallest building in the world (only because of a radio mast at the top) - and spent quite a while trying to pluck up the courage to step onto the glass floor - we have pics/video of this that I will try and put up next time... It's boiling hot here, so over this time I managed to burn my shoulders and my nose and get a blister from my new flipflops, so I'm now sticking to my crocs and wearing copious layers of suncream/make up to cover my rudolph nose.
In the afternoon, Maher picked us up and took us out to lunch at a crab and seafood bar, where we sat outside and I had a lovely linguine jambalaya, most of which ended up on my face - it was windy.
Today we've prepared for our 2 day train journey to Edmonton, as we're leaving tomorrow morning and are going to Maher's house in the 'burbs' for tea tonight. We had lunch in the Yonge-Dundas square, where they had live music acts playing and are now heading back to halls to pack up for tomorrow's rail adventure :S
Hope you are all well at home / wherever you are - I will post some photos, etc when we get to the Rockies on Monday. Lots of love to you all - Catherine x x x
