Famous bamboo grove

Arashiyama is well known for it's bamboo forest or grove. However, it is not the only bamboo forest in Japan. The Scenic village of Sagano in Arashiyama is only 20 minutes away from Kyoto by train. The train route is scenic too. Once at Arashiyama Station, you can either walk towards the grove through the shrines and temples or head directly to the village.

The area is worth while exploring and spending the day in. The streets are lined with shops and cafes, often packed with tourists. You can take the ride in the carriage and get pulled by the cheering Japanese driver in a short ride through the village and listen to the stories of the homes and their former residents.

Other activities includes visiting the Iwatayama Monkey Park. A small fee applies and you are on your way to the top of the hill where most of the monkeys bask. The hill is really steep and several resting points are available. Once on the top, you can view the Oi River below and the famous Togetsukyo Bridge  or "Moon Crossing Bridge." Kyoto can be clearly seen too. At the summit is a small snacks hut which you can relax in and annoy the monkeys.

River cruise is available, and even river rafting. However, if you  decide to do the rafting, you have to arrange with the tour and make a stop in a different station. Moreover, I've heard of nearby onsen, but haven't visited the site. If you are interested in seeing more temples and shrines than Kyoto's, Arashiyama has 7 temples in case.

These includes Otagi Nenbutsuji, Adashino Nenbutsuji , Gioji, Nisonin, Jojakkoji, Tenryuji , and Daikakuji temples. The temples' grounds are open to public in most places. However, a small fee applies when entering inside the buildings.

Sagano Romantic Train is a scenic train that runs along Hozugawa River. It is a 25 minute ride from Arashiyama to Torokko Kameoka Station with a nice view on the river and mountains. I would recommend the train during Autumn time in November and December. Unfortunately, the train is not operating in the Winter which meant that we didn't get on the train in our visits to Japan (Dommage!). You can choose a return trip to Arashiyama, take the train back to Arashiyama, or take the cruise back.
