Memorial Day at Virginia Beach
May 25th 2007: We were up before the sun and set out for CMH where we boarded Skybus. It had been in the air only a week, but everything went smoothly. I would recommend traveling Skybus for cheapo air if they fly into a city near you. It was no frills, but effective. Upon arriving in Richmond, we rented a car and headed to VA Beach where it was arranged for us to stay with 20 other family members in an old military barracks. It was comfortable and fun to be with family. We then drove to Norfolk and the USS Wisconsin and the most impressive ceremony I've ever witnessed. If you EVER get the change to go to a military retirement ceremony, DO IT! After the ceremony my cousins' had a hog roast on a beautiful beach.
May 26th, 2007: We were up pretty bright and early and on the beach. Included with our stay was a private section of beach. The water was still very cold but the sand and sun were warm. I was nursing a pretty good burn by this point. We drove to Forst Story and climbed up the very old lighthouse. We also saw the memorial that was at the landing site of the first settlers of Jamestown. We ate at Captain George's all-you-can-eat seafood buffet which was good, but expensive! We wrapped up the day by strolling through the tourist shops and boardwalk along the beach. It was a very pleasent day.
May 27th: This was basically a beach and family day.
May 28th: again up before the sun on to Richmond. We flew back on Skybus. Would you believe that round trip tickets for 2 of us, including taxes and all that, were less than $80?!?! Quite a deal. With gas being $3.50 a gallon that weekend, it was WELL worth it to fly.
