View at breakfast
Day 2 started with a bit of sleeping in. Now, it wasn't until 10 or 11 am, but it was until 8:30 am, and when you have a toddler, that is heavenly. After an appropriate amount of lounging around, we headed for breakfast in the hotel restaurant. A breakfast buffet is included with the room and it is a spectacular buffet. There are exotic Thai fruits, meats and curries, pastries, an egg/omelet bar. We had a nice breakfast overlooking the water of both the beach and the pool and then headed out to Patong Beach
again. We had plans to meet with the tailor for fittings and to do some shopping!
We had the hotel driver take us back to the beach and headed to the tailor's shop.
mmm, fresh fruit!
The husband tried on a few items to check for fit and they looked great. I tried on my dress and asked for a few adjustments. Then decided, why the heck not? And picked out another dress. A fancier one, made from Chinese silk. And then off to shop! Patong Beach has many beach vendors along the beach and in small streets that shoot off from the main beach road. We walked along and picked up a few things for different people and for ourselves. And then we had lunch at one of the many little local places. Lunch was great and I am definitely getting my fill of Thai food after not having it for months in Ukraine. More shopping after lunch (I scored a great set of handwoven placemats and coasters!), pedicures, a fitting for my second dress and then a taxi back to the hotel.
I was hoping to get back in time for the sunset, but then realized that we are on the EAST coast of the island, not the WEST (duh!).
Beer bars-little open air bars where old men chat up thai women (at least they HOPE they're women!)
So we went for an evening swim and I played with some long exposure shots at the pool. One of the things I'm trying to make time for on this vacation is to learn a little more about my dSLR camera and take some better pictures. It's hard to find the time to do things like that with a toddler running around.
After our swim, we decided to book a few excursions. I love to sit and relax on a vacation, but I also love to explore. So we booked a half day elephant trek for Tuesday and a full day culture tour of the island for Thursday. Then we decided to walk out from the hotel grounds to find some place for dinner. This would have been a great idea, if there was anything right outside the hotel. As it turns out, there is not. So we walked for a while and finally found a Thai place (surprise). But it was a great find. We were the only ones there but I can't imagine why. The food was wonderful (crab with lemon and crab with garlic) and it was a cute little outdoor place. We were happy to have it to ourselves, though.
Then the long walk back and we headed to bed. I wanted to make sure to be able to get up early to see the sunrise on the water. We don't get much for sunrises or sunsets in Kyiv. Too many tall buildings and bad air.
