Katakolon was a fishing village before it became a tourist stop
Katakolon, Greece  was a fishing village with a small port not too long ago.  Now it is a small fishing village with a large port tacked on for cruises and disembarking passengers going to the site of the ancient Olympics.  Not surprisingly, Katakolon has also gotten some new port-side restaurants and mega-shopping opportunities tacked on as well.

I was interested in visiting a Museum of Ancient Technology that I’d heard was in Katakolon but never managed to find it.  Admittedly I didn’t try very hard to locate it after I spent the morning touring Olympia and its museum, having lunch along Katakolon’s harbor and visiting many of the town’s shops.  The jewelry shopping by the way is awesome, although I didn't buy anything.  Maybe next time.

It’s an interesting village and the surrounding countryside is surprisingly comfortable and settled looking with well-tended small farms.  Most of Greece in this area is rocky with dramatic views and cliffs dropping down into crashing seas.  Around Katakolon the land is level, non-rocky and arable; as I said comfortable-looking.
