Naumburg and surrounding

After a delicious and rich breakfast we grabbed our cameras and headed to Naumburg.
The first written record of Naumburg dates from 1012, when it was mentioned as the new castle of the Ekkehardinger, the Margrave of Meissen. It was founded at the crossing of two trade-routes. The successful foundation not long beforehand of a Propstei Church on the site of the later Naumburger Cathedral was mentioned in the Merseburg Bishops' Chronicles in 1021.
Naumburg was a significant trading centre on the Via Regia in the Middle Ages, especially because of the Naumburg Trade Fairs, first known to have taken place in 1278. The emergence of Leipzig as a trade-fair centre from 1500 and the Thirty Years' war adversely affected the Naumburg economy.
You see, more history to work on ;) Finding a parking place close to the Cathedral makes our "what-to-see-first" decision easier.
At first we headed to the treasure room where a video about the history of Naumburg and the cathedral has been shown. It was very interesting to watch. With it we were prepared to understand what we would see next. Unfortunately it wasn't allowed to take photos in the treasure room. This time there was a video control :p
The cathedral is very impressive but what I'll mostly will remember is that it's incredible cold there. There's no heating in it and my hands were nearly frozen off while taking photos.
But not only the cathedral is worth a visit, the old town is it, too. The market square is beautiful and you find amazing old houses around. Heaven for everybody who loves old architecture.
Not far from Naumburg you find the castle "Schönburg" (beautiful castle). It's not as big as Neuenburg and mostly destroyed but as its name says beautiful. We climbed up the tower and had an amazing view over the river Saale and the surrounding.
Around 4.30 p.m. we drove back to the hotel for a rest. Learning about history is very exhausting :p At 6 p.m. it was time to prepare ourselves for another amazing dinner at the restaurant "Küchenmeisterey". The perfect ending of a perfect day.
