Me & Ray
I met Rui about 2 years before my trip to Beijing, and we had become good friends in exchanging e-mail. She likes the nickname Ray since that is sort of how it would be pronounced in English. She is a physicist like myself, so we had many conversations in e-mail of a scientific nature, shared music, witty dialog, philosophy and something of ourselves with eachother. She was still a PhD student when we met, but obtained her doctorate and found a position in Guangzhou. As fate would have it, she was visiting with her parents for Chinese new year the same time I was visiting there. She was very nice to come with her father to meet me at the airport and escort me to my hotel on Jinbao Street. We were able to spend time the next day, and although very cold, we visited Wangfujing market, Tiananmen square, NCPA (National Center for Performing Arts) and walk about. It was a nice introduction to Beijing and wonderful to spend time with my friend - A meeting of great minds!
Toward evening My friend Gang and his brother (John) picked me up at my hotel and brought me to meet the family. First we went on an excursion to find cell phone sim cards and Gang provided me with a cell phone to use. It was a good evening and I had an opportunity to meet Gang's brother (John), his brother's wife, his sister and his mother. I had something to eat and some conversation. All in all a good day, but I was very tired.
